From understanding dementia to understanding the person.

Dementia Education for Organisations

Empatia's approach to education is based on extensive clinical experience and a wide body of academic literature: psychosocial models of dementia, including Tom Kitwood's person-centred approach and Graham Stokes' work on behaviour as communication, alongside medical models such as BPSD (Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia), and research on hope, resilience and living well with dementia.

Empatia education goes beyond delivering information about dementia. Sessions combine evidence and specialist knowledge with facilitated discussion, reflection and real situations from practice. Staff are supported to think about the whole person, their identity and life story, what they may be experiencing, their physical and emotional well-being, the environment around them and the relationships that matter to them.

The aim is not simply to teach staff what to do, but to develop the understanding, curiosity and confidence to ask why, and respond in a genuinely person-centred way.

Education & Training / Dementia Education for Organisations

Evidence-based, reflective dementia education that helps staff translate person-centred care from theory into sustainable everyday practice.

  • Centred around the national Dementia Training Standards Framework

Evidence. Discussion. Reflection. Practice.

Learning is interactive rather than lecture-based. Staff are encouraged to bring their experience, question assumptions, reflect on real situations and consider how evidence can be translated into better everyday care.

Modules you can take alone or combine

Each module below is mapped to the national Dementia Training Standards Framework, and can be commissioned on its own or combined into a half day, full day or bespoke programme.

Aligned with the national standards

01

Understanding Dementia

Understand the condition

How different dementias affect the brain, cognition, communication, emotions and everyday life, and why knowing the diagnosis alone never tells us everything we need to know about the person.

02

Communication, Behaviour & Distress

Understand the message behind the behaviour

Move beyond labels like "challenging behaviour" and away from stigmatising words like "aggression".

Instead, look at what sits behind the distress or change in behaviour

Using real situations, staff learn to consider the person's history, identity, symptoms and changes, well-being, environment and relationships, before deciding how to respond.

The result: less distress for the person in your care, and less pressure on staff.

03

Person-Centred Care in Practice

Let the person lead their care, not just receive it

Exploring what person-centred care actually looks like in day-to-day practice. Staff reflect on identity, autonomy, relationships, meaningful activity and individual need, and consider how routines, communication and care can adapt around and empower the person rather than expecting the person to adapt around the service.
